Polished Carnelian Stone

This wonderful deep red stone features dark matrix webs throughout. What a great example of high quality Carnelian from Madagascar.  Some of the oldest examples of jewelry contain this translucent reddish orange chalcedony and it has held a presence in the myths and world history of ancient civilizations.  The name is said to be derived from the Latin word cranes meaning flesh due to its color.  Egyptians believed the stone had great power in the afterlife and so revered the stone that it was one of the three stones most often used in their jewelry. Carnelian is found throughout the world, the most renowned mines being in India, Brazil, Uruguay, and Japan.
