Santo Domingo Turquoise and Spiny Shell Heishe Necklace
This Santo Domingo Turquoise and Spiny Shell Necklace is made with handcrafted heishe beads. The Santo Domingo Pueblo is located near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Santo Domingo artisans have been creating heishe (hee-shee) beads for over 1,000 years. Heishi beads are discs of shell or turquoise that have been ground into smooth barrel shapes. Then they're drilled and strung to create beautiful, smooth flexible tubes of stones. Santo Domingo heishe is world renowned for its fineness in materials and workmanship. This necklace has heishi beads of Turquoise and Spiny Shell. The beautiful Spiny Shell is found deep in the Sea of Cortez in the Baja region of the Gulf of California. The orange Spiny Shell has been cut to represent the shape of corn which is a symbol of abundance to Native Americans. It is finished with a sterling silver lobster clasp. Wear it with a T-shirt or for a night out.
