Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral. The name pyrite is derived from the Greek word for fire. Pyrite’s shiny metallic appearance has earned it the nickname “fool’s gold.” The ancient Incas used Pyrite as mirrors. It is found all over the world, but important deposits are in Italy, Spain, and Peru. Pyrite is said to enhance willpower, helping one to overcome bad habits. This beautiful specimen from Peru has been cut in the shape of a pyramid.

The pyramid shape is very strong, being primarily made of stable triangles, and it has become a symbol of stability. An inverted pyramid symbolizes spiritual development, as an individual became more aware of the broadness and fullness of life and spirituality.  Mathematicians and alchemists find significance in the ratios of the height to the base or the lengths of the diagonals, and they can use the pyramid to solve the problem of "squaring the circle."  Other people see the four sides as representing the four elements (wind, fire, air, and water) converging to a single point.
